A filter device (11) for a washing machine of the present embodiment is provided with a water supply path for supplying water from an external water source to the washing machine. The filter device (11) is provided with a filter case (14), a core member (23), a filter material (24) and a retaining plate (25). The filter case (14) is a container-shaped member comprising a water flow inlet (15) at one end and a water flow outlet (16) at the other end. The core member (23) is positioned and housed between the water flow inlet (15) and the water flow outlet (16) in the filter case (14) and comprises a plurality of through-holes (23a) in the circumferential wall which forms a cylinder shape. The filter material (24) is a cloth material wound into a cylinder shape, and is retained by the core member (23). The retaining plate (25) is supported at one end of the core member (23) so as to cover the filter material (24) from above, and comprises a surface facing the inflow direction of water from the flow inlet (15) of the filter case (14). After the water from the water inlet (15) has been received at the retaining plate (25), the filter device (11) filters impurities by passing the water from the outer circumferential surface side of the filter material (24) to the core side.
