A sampling device adapted to remove a sample of biological material from a target and dispense said sample to a testing station, said device comprising an applicator body (1) adapted for manipulating said device and a sampling tip (11) adapted to harvest said sample and co-operate with said body wherein said body includes a tip engaging/releasing means (13) adapted for hands free engagement and release of said tip, said tip engaging/releasing means including a tip engaging catch (14) and a tip opening rim (17) and wherein said tip includes a sample piercing point (29) at a first end, engaging/releasing jaws (18) at a second end and an intermediate sampling barb (12) such that said tip is engaged by the partial introduction of said engaging/releasing means between said tip jaws causing said engaging catch to positively engage said jaws and wherein said tip is released from the positive engagement by the full introduction of said engaging/releasing means between said tip jaws causing said tip opening rim to open and disengage said jaws.
