An apparatus for coating the surface of an article 1, e.g. a car body or refrigerator cabinet, comprises a beam 42 supportable for pivotal movement about an axis 7 between its ends in a plane parallel to the surface of the article, conveyer 2 for moving articles in a straight line path at a constant linear speed, spraying device 3 mounted on a carriage 4 for reciprocation lengthwise of the beam 42, and beam swinging means operable by carriage 4 at the end of each stroke of the carriage 4 to swing the beam 42 about said axis 7 whereby the spraying device 3 during successive strokes thereof is traversed along paths 5 and 6 inclined on opposite sides of a line at right angles to said straight line path and in a direction in each path such that a component of the movement of the spraying device 3 always lies in the same direction as the direction of movement of the article 1, The beam swinging means comprises a change over cylinder 8 housing a piston 9 having a rod 10 connected thereto and to the beam 42 as indicated by 11 and pneumatic control devices co-operating with said cylinder to control movement of piston 9, the control devices including pneumatic switches operable by carriage 4. Other beam swinging means may be used, e.g. electrical, mechanical, or electrically operated pneumatic means. Adjustable stops 34 and 35 may be present to determine the extent of the beam swinging movement. The spraying device may include two spray guns spaced apart in the direction of movement of the article, the switching off and on of said guns being done separately. The spray gun may be connected to the carriage by a linkage such that the spray gun is movable to accommodate different sizes of articles to be coated. A photo cell may be used to initiate the operation. The increment of the forward movement of the article during a traverse of the spray is a factor of the width of the spray where it impinges on the surface of the article. |
