In a method of covering edges or profiles of shaped parts or boards 1 of organic materials, which shaped parts or boards have zones 3 of lower density, with synthetic plastic sheets 7 which are hardenable under heat and pressure, the edges of the shaped parts or boards which have lower density are so shaped that when the sheet 7 is pressed thereon and contact heat is. applied by a hot face of a pressing element, an additional compacting is -effected in the region of the zones, whereby over the area to be covered a sufficient counter-pressure is produced and the synthetic resin forming the sheet 7 and being subjected to final condensation flows uniformly and enters into an intimate union with the material of the shaped part or board. In one .embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, a chipboard 1, having the faces thereof covered with synthetic plastic material, has zones 2 of greater density than a zone 3 and is formed with a convex edge 4. The board 1 is positioned on a spacer-bar 6 and a sheet 7 of synthetic plastic, e.g. paper impregnated with melamine resin, is arranged adjacent the edge 4 so as to be pressed thereonto by a heated press stamp 5. The edge 4 is flattened and a compacted zone 8 is formed as the sheet 7 is bonded to the edge 4. Parts 10 of the sheet 7 become brittle owing to lack of pressure thereon. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the press stamp 11 has a convex face and the board has a flat edge 13 so that'the-edge 13 becomes concave when the synthetic plastic sheet is bonded thereto. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), a pressure beam 17 heated by a device 18 is connected to a pressure cushion 19, e.g. of heat-resistant silicone rubber, joined to a flexible band 20, e.g. of chrome-nickel steel, heated by electrical resistance means. The 'flexible surface -provided by the band 20 additionally compacts the lower density zone of the board 22 during the bonding of a synthetic plastic sheet 21 thereto by the press stamp. In an embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), for covering the edge of a profiled board '28 supported on a bar 29, a pre-shaped sheet 30 of synthetic plastic is pressed on to the profiled surfaces 33 of the board 28 by a press beam 32 acting on heated press stamps 31 sprung in relation to each other and obliquely disposed, as shown. In an embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), for simultaneously covering the edges of three boards 27 with a synthetic plastic sheet 26, a pressure beam 25 acts on three press stamps 23 through springs 24. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), synthetic plastic sheets 39 are bonded to the edges of boards 38 by press stamps 34, 35 sprung in relation to each other and disposed as shown. A movable pressure beam 37 and a rigid pressure beam 36 are provided. Instead of a pressure cushion or springs, a pneumatic or hydraulic system may be used to effect the springing of the press stamps.
