A machine for making envelopes of different sizes comprises a frame 14 defining a path 15 of envelope blank travel and a series of clutch activated mechanisms disposed along the path 15 to sequentially operate on the blanks, some of which are independently adjustable by rotation of a common shaft 32 in response to blank dimensional changes whilst the others are adjusted by driving members 16 themselves driving by a main drive motor 2. The shaft 32 adjusts mechanisms, e.g. a flap separator 17, Fig. 2, via intermeshing bevel gears and chains and sprockets, each mechanism having an electrically operated clutch for engagement or disengagement with the shaft 32 for selective mechanism adjustment. Rotation of the shaft 32 is controlled by a master motor 102 which, as with the clutches, receives signals from a computer 103 via their respective conduits 104, 105 in response to blank (envelope) dimensional changes. Handles may be used for manual " fine tuning " of the mechanisms. |
