Provided is a technique for managing an online game in order to increase user utilization of the game and enable service diversification. A method for managing character information of a sports game according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises the steps of: receiving event information on teams and/or players included in an online game, from related organizations and/or media of a sports event corresponding to the online game; selecting at least one player related to the event information; selecting a game character which is consistent with identification information of the selected player; setting the degree of ability improvement which is to be added to the ability of the selected game character, according to the event information; and adding the degree of the ability improvement to the ability of the game character stored in a game server.
