Prodn. of chlorides of V, Mo, W, Ta, Nb, Ti and B is by chlorination of iron alloys of these elements, absorption of gaseous FeCl3 in a heated bed of NaCl, and condensation of the vapours of other metal chlorides, which have passed through the NaCl bed, according to the Parent Patent No:485600, is improved by introducing a molten NaClXFe Cl3 mixture where the metal is chlorinated at the expense of FeCl3, condensing the resulting metal chloride vapour outside the reaction zone; and chlorinating the resulting ferrous chloride back to FeCl3 with Cl2 introduced into the melt in or outside the reaction zone. The metal chlorides so produced can be converted into oxides and re-used in prodn. of hard metal alloys.
|
