Disclosed are a mobile terminal and a method for controlling same. The mobile terminal is characterized by comprising: a sound output module; a memory for storing text; and a controller for converting at least a portion of the text to a voice and then outputting the voice through the sound output module, wherein the controller stores, in the memory, at least a portion of voice data which is outputted after being converted to the voice, and outputs the voice based on the stored voice data to the sound output module when a voice output signal corresponding to at least a portion of the text is acquired. According to the present invention, the time taken to output the voice can be reduced by outputting the voice on the basis of the stored voice data when the voice output signal corresponding to the part which is outputted as a voice is acquired.
