Compositions for improving the utilization of non-protein nitrogen by ruminant animals comprise particles of a non-toxic, non-protein nitrogen compound, e.g. urea, ammonium salts, coated or bound into pellets with a substance susceptible to disintegration in the rumen, e.g. casein or soya bean protein glue, egg white, gelatine, a dissolved cellulose or cellulose derivative such as methyl cellulose, a wax, or a fat, fatty acid or paraffin of high m.pt. The compositions may contain ground roughage, e.g. ground hay, cultures of rumen micro-organisms, and nutrients therefor exemplified by dried yeast, irradiated yeast or yeast extract, dried distillers' fermentation solubles, dried liver or liver extract, dried buttermilk, meals of dried cereal grass and dried alfalfa leaf.
