The method involves assigning a private Internet protocol (IP) address for an on-board platform (110) so that the private IP address is used only within an on-board network (115), where the IP address includes a prefix referring to a generic structure and a suffix indicating a host machine (111). A public IP address usable outside the on-board network is assigned for the on-board platform based on an aircraft on which the host machine is embedded, where translation of the public IP address to private IP address and vice-versa are carried out by an address translation gateway (NAT). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for communication between an on-board platform and the ground (2) a fleet aircraft.
