The claimed inventions relate to foundry work. A metered quantity of components of a mixture is poured into a mixer, a calculated quantity of water is introduced and the components are mixed. The moisture content of the mixture is measured directly in the mixer after a representative sample is taken. The sample is taken with the aid of a unit for monitoring the moisture content of the mixture, the unit comprising a specimen-forming case fixed at an inclination on the wall of an immovable cup. The specimen is produced from the representative sample taken by means of compaction and the moisture content is measured with subsequent adjustment of the moisture content of the batch being monitored.
