A tire having a circumferential tread rubber composite configured with a cap/base construction is disclosed. The cap/base construction comprises a radially outer tread cap rubber layer (3) at least partially forming the running surface (4) of the tread (2) and at least one radially inner zoned tread base rubber layer (5A, 5B). The zoned tread base rubber layer (5A, 5B) at least partially underlies the tread cap rubber layer (3) and has an axial width. The zoned tread base rubber layer (5A, 5B) comprises a circumferential central tread base zone (5B) and at least one circumferential lateral tread base zone (5A) adjoining the central tread base zone (5B) and positioned on at least one side of the central tread base zone (5B). The central tread base zone (5B) occupies from 10 to 80 percent of the axial width of the tread base rubber layer (5A, 5B) and the at least one lateral tread base zone(s) together (5A) occupy the remainder of the axial width of the tread base rubber layer (5A, 5B). The rubber composition of the at least one lateral tread base zone (5A) is stiffer than the rubber composition of the central tread base zone (5B). |
