The receiving side is enabled to accurately handle configuration changes of elementary streams. Stream association information, which associates respective elementary streams (ESs) contained in a transport stream (TS) with each other, is inserted into an ES. This stream correlation information shows the associations between the first ES containing first image data and a predetermined number of second ESs each containing second image data and/or metadata associated with the first image data. The stream correlation information shows the associations among the respective ESs using identifiers that identify the respective ESs. For example, a descriptor, which shows the associations between the identifiers for the respective ESs and packet identifiers or component tags within the respective ESs, is inserted into the TS in order to assure the coordination between the registration statuses of the respective ESs within the TS layer and the stream association information.
