[Class 64(i)] Relates to heat-exchangers of the type in which hot and cold fluids are passed through different parts of a bank of elements and means are arranged to move relatively to the end faces of the bank to alternate the exposure of the parts of the bank to the fluid streams. According to the invention, the means comprise shutter rings 13, 14 which isolate a sealed space between the elements and the inlet 9 and outlet 10 of one fluid which passes inside the rings, the other fluid passing around the rings and through the remainder of the elements not thus isolated. In one form, the apparatus comprises a drum 1 housing an annulus of elements 4, the drum having inlet and outlet ports 9, 10, and 11, 12 for the respective fluids. The spaces between the ports 9, 10 and the bank of elements is occupied by shutters comprising pairs of rings 13, 14 telescoped together and provided with packing rings 15. The shutters are mounted eccentrically and are caused to sweep the end faces of the annular bank by the rotation of a driving shaft 16. In a modification, Fig. 5, the fluids pass through two conduits 24, 25 arranged one inside the other, the smaller conduit 24 carrying the shutters and being offset from the axis of the larger conduit 25. The bank of elements 1 is coaxial with the larger conduit and is caused to rotate within it by a gear drive 30, 31. In a further modification, the smaller conduit is mainly coaxial with the larger but is provided with cranked portions which carry the shutters in a sweeping motion across the end faces of a stationary bank of elements.
