<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing bromine in a high yield by oxidizing hydrogen bromide with oxygen. <P>SOLUTION: Bromine is produced by oxidizing hydrogen bromide with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst that contains at least one kind selected from the group consisting of metallic ruthenium and ruthenium compounds. The catalyst is preferably a catalyst in which at least one kind is supported on a carrier, the at least one kind being selected from the group consisting of metallic ruthenium and ruthenium compounds.
