Electronic inks are disclosed herein. One embodiment of the electronic ink includes a non-polar carrier fluid, a plurality of negatively charged colorant particles dispersed in the non-polar carrier fluid, a small molecular additive, and a charge director. Each of the negatively charged colorant particles includes a surface modified with an acidic functional group. The small molecular additive has at least two branches, each of which includes nitrogen or oxygen atoms.
