<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate an appropriate pattern by simpler processing in a case where the shape or the size of a pattern area can be changed. <P>SOLUTION: A control unit of an image forming apparatus sets a pattern area on a recording medium P, and specifies coordinates of the pattern area on a predetermined plane when the pattern area is arranged on the plane with a certain position in the set pattern area matching the center of the plane.
