Class 106 (2) An apparatus, Fig. 1, for rotating a test part D beneath the feeler of an indicator gauge 15 comprises a spindle 17, Fig. 2, for supporting the part D, radial thrust bearings 21, 22 and axial thrust bearings 27 for supporting the spindle 17, means 16 for rotating the spindle 17, and means 37 for moving the spindle 17 axially away from the axial thrust bearing 27. To avoid damage to the axial thrust bearing 27, the part D is applied to and removed from the spindle 17 only when the spindle 17 is displaced from the axial thrust bearing 27. A lamp 58, Fig. 1, may be lit automatically when such a displacement has been effected. The apparatus may include a power operated mechanism for tapping the parts D into position whilst they are being arranged on the spindle 17 with means for rendering said mechanism inoperative when the spindle 17 is engaged with the axial thrust bearing 27. The means 37 for causing a vertical displacement of the spindle 17 comprises a jack ring which normally rests on stationary bearing buttons 41. Fig. 6 shows a plane development of the jack ring 37 on the bearing buttons 41. When the jack ring 37 is rotated, cam lobes 42 on the bottom of the jack ring ride up on the buttons 41 to displace the jack ring to the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 6 and thereby lift the spindle 17 from its axial thrust bearing 27. By means of a lever 43, Fig. 1, the jack ring 37 may be coupled when desired to a ring gear 31, Fig. 2, meshing with a shank pinion 32 to which the hand wheel 16 is secured. The jack ring 37 may thus be turned through the desired amount by the hand wheel 16 to raise the spindle 17 from its thrust bearing 27. The apparatus includes means 66 for locking the spindle 17 against rotation, withdrawable means 57 for stopping the rotation of the jack ring 37 when it is resting on the buttons 41 and means for locking the lever 43 in position when in use.
