The device (1) has a support part (4) integrated with a backrest (2) and arranged remote from a transverse axis (3). A braking lever (5) is rotated along another transverse axis (13). The lever is movable between two extreme positions. A traction spring actuates the lever toward one of the positions. The support part is arranged so as to be supported on the lever from an intermediate folding configuration and to remain supported on the lever for folding the backrest, while being moved away from the latter transverse axis and driving the lever toward the other position.
