<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lost motion mechanism without increasing the height size of an engine. <P>SOLUTION: A valve system (8) is installed on a cylinder head (36) of an engine, and driven by a camshaft (39), and includes an intake valve (81) which has a stem (811) extending straight, and is driven in the extending direction of the stem (811) to open and close an intake port (361) communicated with a combustion chamber (355) of the engine, a valve tappet (83) which is disposed between one end side of the stem (811) located farther from the combustion chamber (355) and the camshaft (39) to transmit the power from the camshaft (39) to the intake valve (81), and a lost motion mechanism (84) capable of interrupting the power transmission from the valve tappet (83) to the intake valve (81).
