The invention relates to an internal combustion engine (1), comprising: an even number of inline cylinders, each accommodating a piston (8); a crankshaft (10) rotatably mounted about an axis (A1); first and second balance shafts (20, 30) rotatably mounted about balancing axes (A2) parallel to and separate from said engine axis; and first and second means (40, 50) for rotating said first and second balance shafts at rotating speeds that are dependent on the rotating speed of said crankshaft. According to the invention, the balancing axes of the first and second balance shafts coincide, and said second rotating means comprises a means for adjusting the phase difference between the angular positions of the first and second balance shafts around said balancing axis.
