<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera capable of further improving an operation performance, while accommodating to an old type interchangeable lens using a conventional communication system, and to provide an interchangeable lens. <P>SOLUTION: An image pickup apparatus mountable with an interchangeable lens includes: control means that can switch between a first communication mode for outputting a clock signal from a first terminal and communicating with the lens via a second terminal based on the clock signal, and a second communication mode for communicating with the lens via the first terminal or the second terminal without using the clock signal; and detecting means for detecting whether the mounted interchangeable lens has a first lens side terminal accommodated with the first terminal or not.
