<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a television receiver capable of displaying the correct device names of connected external devices in the television receiver. <P>SOLUTION: A television receiver requests the transmission of a device name and vendor ID to an external device (#1) and receives the device name and vendor ID from the external device (#2). When the received vendor ID is the same as a vendor ID previously held in a memory (YES in #3) and also when the received device name is the same as the device name previously held in a memory (YES in #4), the received device name is displayed (#5). When the received device name is not the same as the device name previously held in the memory (NO in #4), the device name previously held in the memory is displayed (#6).
