PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display device is provided to supply a layer made of media which can be switched between optical isotropy and anisotropy and obtain better frontal contrast. CONSTITUTION: A slow axis(20a) of a first phase difference area(20) crosses a slow axis(22a) of a second phase difference area(22). In-surface retardation of wavelength 550nm of the first phase difference area is shorter than 20nm. Thickness direction retardation of wavelength 550nm of the first phase difference area is between 20nm and 120nm. The second phase difference area includes a phase difference layer which has discotic liquid crystal compounds. The discotic liquid crystal compounds are fixed while the discotic liquid crystal compounds are aligned. |
