The present invention provides a birefringent transfer foil which comprises a temporary support, an alignment layer and a birefringent layer composed of a composition containing a liquid crystalline compound having at least one reactive group in this order, wherein the alignment layer comprises an alkyletherified cellulose or a hydroxyalkyl derivative of an alkyletherified cellulose. In this birefringent transfer foil, the alignment layer can serve as both a protective layer and a release layer and the cost required for the production of the transfer foil can be reduced.
