PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink cartridge capable of protecting a projecting part provided on a side face from various disturbances and a cartridge holding apparatus equipped with this. SOLUTION: The ink cartridge 30 is equipped with an ink tank 32 and a cover 33. The cover 33 is supported so that the cover 33 can be slid vertically at the front face 40 of the ink tank 32. The front face of the ink tank 32 is provided with a detecting window 39, an opening 50 communicating with the atmosphere and an ink feeding opening 51. The cover 33 is slid between a position (a first position) covering the side face of the detecting window 39 and a position (a second position) exposing the side face of the detecting window 39. When the cover 33 is at the first position, the opening 50 communicating with the atmosphere and the ink feeding opening 51 are closed by the cover 33.
