<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gradient index type liquid crystal optical element, which has a simple structure and is easily driven and inexpensive, and to provide a display device. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical element includes: a liquid crystal layer held between a first substrate and a second substrate; a plurality of first electrodes, a plurality of second electrodes and a plurality of third electrodes, formed on a liquid crystal layer side of the first substrate and arrayed along a first direction; and a fourth electrode formed on a liquid crystal layer side of the second substrate. In each of the third electrodes, a first electrode pair including the first electrode and the second electrode is disposed on one side of the both sides of the third electrode, while a second electrode pair including the first electrode and the second electrode is disposed on the other side of the third electrode. The first electrode pair is arranged in such a manner that the center of the second electrode on a cross section along the first direction, viewed from the second substrate, is located nearer to the third electrode than the center of the first electrode.
