A coating machine for the production of continuous strips of plastic foam, comprises means for advancing sheet material; an applicator depositing on to said sheet a predetermined thickness and width of coating material; means curing the coating material into plastic foam; means for withdrawing plastic foam and at least one pair of edge regulators positioned to direct gas streams toward the edge of the coating material, whereby the width of the plastic foam is maintained within predetermined limits. In the machine 10 (Fig. 1) sheet material 11 is advanced from a roll 12 through a coating zone 13 where, for example polyurethane chemicals are deposited from a reciprocating applicator 17, metering zone 14, curing zone 15 and product withdrawal zone 16. Adjacent the metering zone 14 edge regulators 18 are positioned on both sides of the advancing strip 11 and adapted to direct a compressed air stream at the coating composition tending to flow beyond the predetermined limits. Further, sets of pneumatic edge regulators may be positioned between 14 and 16. In other embodiments the edge regulators are in the forms of porous plates extending along the edge of the strip, funnel shaped members directing the gas stream along a significant length of the edge of the strip or a plurality of nozzles each mounted for precise adjustment of the gas stream therefrom. |
