A hydroxypolynitro compound of the formula <FORM:0974122/C1/1> wherein R is hydrogen or a lower alkyl or lower hydroxyalkyl radical containing up to 6 carbon atoms or monocyclic alkyl and R1 is hydrogen or methyl, is made by adding an alkali metal nitrite stepwise to a mixture of alkanol R1-CHO and a nitro compound RCH2NO2 and subsequently introducing the resultant nitrite complex into a solution of silver nitrate while maintaining the pH in the range of from 4.0 to 5.0. Suitable nitro compounds are 2-nitroethane, 2-nitropropane, 1-nitrocyclopentane, 1-nitrocyclohexane, endo-methylene-2-nitrocyclohexane and endo-nitroethylene anthracene. The preparation of 2, 2-dinitropropanol and 2, 2-dinitro-1, 3-propanediol is exemplified. Specification 949,983 is referred to.
