A disconnectible coupling comprises a socket member 19 having an opening therein for receiving a coaxial socket-engaging member 20 at least one of the members having a fluid-conducting passage therein, which members, on engagement, are relatively rotatable to a sealed interlocking position and are releasably locked in said position by a latch carried by the socket-engaging member having a retractable locking portion engageable with an edge area of the opening in the socket member only when the members are in the interlocked position, a part of the locking portion having a greater rotational radius about the axial centre of the coupling members than the minimum distance of the engaged area to the axial centre whereby the said locking portion operates when engaged with the edge area positively to prevent relative rotation of the coupling members. As shown, the joint member 19, of aluminium alloy, stainless steel or a rigid thermoplastic material, is of circular configuration and includes an integral tubular portion 21 screwed into a flat annular ring 23, the planar faces 22, 24 of the portion 21 and the ring 23 between which the wall of an airman's pressure suit is clamped having annular grooves 25, 26 to accommodate sealing material. The member 19 also includes a seating surface 27 having an annular recess in which is received an 0-ring 29 of elastomeric material, the ring being compressed axially upon connection of the two members 19, 20; also the member 19 is provided with a continuous, annular sidewall 31 terminating in a number of overhanging segmental projections 32 defining a generally polygonal opening. The member 20 constitutes a hollow, integral nozzle 34 and has an end wall portion 40 which includes a number of planar, circumferentially spaced, flange portions 41 whereby the end wall portion has an outer peripheral configuration corresponding to that of the opening in the member 19. The member 20 is juxtaposed and rotated relative to the member 19 and into interlocked relation therewith whereby the flange portions 41 pass beneath the projections 32 as shown in Fig. 2. For preventing relative rotation from the interlocked position, Fig. 2, of the members a retractable spring latch 42 is mounted on the member 20 and operated by a lifting arm 45; the spaced tabs 44 of the latch, when the members are in the unlocked position, Fig. 3, engage on the projections 32. Several modifications are described, one of the members in one case being devised as a plug to close the passage of the other member. |
