Agricultural crops are compressed by extrusion through a plurality of die passages having movable elements which act to even out pressure differences existing between the dies by altering the die opening. A forage crop is fed by belt 20, being precompressed by drum 4 and guided in conjunction with frusto-conical section 46 and flange 44 of wheel 32, to nip 40 of wheels 32 and 34 rotated from chain 70 and sprockets 64 and 66. Wheel 32 consists of hub 54 carrying inner and outer parallel annular plates 72 and 74 and having bevelled edges between which uniform radial die passages 78 alternate with uniform spacer blocks 80; corresponding to plates 88 and 90, passages 94 and blocks 92 of wheel 34. Fodder is continuously fed into the die openings of each wheel alternatively, by rotating in timed relationship with the die blocks of one wheel registering with the openings of the other, and forced radially therethrough to discharge within the annuli at 102 and 104 past shield rings 106 and 108. Plates 74 and 90 are each slit as at 116 to leave tongues 118 and 124 respectively inwardly deflectable to restrict the die passages by means of piston-rod 134 operating from piston 136 of fluid motors 138 (wheel 32) or 150a (wheel 34), one provided for each die opening and, on each wheel, being interconnected in parallel by passages 160 or 162. The motors 138 or 150a are supplied from pumps 168 and 170 respectively; each in turn supplied from reservoirs to inlets 182. Each pump is charged once per rotation by operative engagement of levers 172 or 174, carried on the other wheel, with spring-loaded driving head 194 which operates piston 192 within bore 190. Fluid entering from 182 past check valve 204, upon spring recovery of piston 192, is subsequently delivered, at excess capacity, past check valve 206 into chamber 208 thence via passage 210 to fluid motors 150a. Excess pressure above a predetermined level within motor 150a, either from outward movement of tongue 118 or normally from the excess capacity due to driving head 194, is prevented by connection of the passage 210 to pre-set relief value 214 to return excess volume to the reservoir. In a further embodiment two rows of die openings and blocks are formed by insertion of a splitter plate mid-way between plates 72 and 74 provided with deflectable portions operated from tongues 118 by pressure transmitted through material passing through the die passages.
