e -Caprolactam is produced in a continuous two-stage process comprising (1) mixing e -caprolactone, ammonia and water at a temperature below 200 DEG C. and at a pressure at least equal to autogenous pressure for a period of time sufficient to effect substantial conversion of the e -caprolactone to reaction intermediates (wherein "reaction intermediates" are defined as compounds convertible into e -caprolactam under the process conditions); (2) subjecting the reaction product to a temperature of 300 DEG -400 DEG C. and a pressure of at least 2000 p.s.i.g. for enough time to produce e -caprolactam; (3) continuously recovering the e -caprolactam from the reaction product of step (2) to leave a residue comprising ammonia, water and reaction intermediates; and (4) continuously recycling the ammonia reaction intermediates and a portion of the water to stage (1). The rate of recycle and the rate of feed of the e -caprolactone, ammonia and water are such as to maintain a ratio of 2-12 moles of ammonia and 3-36 moles of water per mole of e -caprolactone in step (1).
