<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic insulation film in which the tapering angle of a contact hole is increased without increasing exposure greatly. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device comprises: a first substrate having a drain line extending in a Y direction and disposed parallel to an X direction, a gate line extending in the X direction and disposed parallel to the Y direction, a thin film transistor for outputting a video signal from the drain line in synchronization with a scanning signal from the gate line, and an organic film formed between the thin film transistor and a pixel electrode; and a second substrate disposed opposite the first substrate via a liquid crystal layer. The organic film has a contact hole for electrically connecting the source electrode of the thin film transistor and the pixel electrode. A step is formed in the lower layer of the organic film. The side edge of the thin film transistor, forming the contact hole for the organic film, is formed on the lower level of the step.
