A process for producing L-threonine comprises culturing an L - threonine - producing microorganism in an aqueous nutrient medium containing L-aspartic acid as the starting material, and separating the desired product from the culture medium. The medium may be synthetic or natural and contains essential nutrients. Culturing is carried out at a temperature of from about 25‹ to 40‹ C. with pH neutral at the beginning, and may be aerobic or anaerobic according to the micro-organism employed. Specified micro-organisms are those belonging to the genera Azotobacter, Arthrobacter, Brevibacterium, Bacillus, Candida, Saccharomycodes, Streptomyces and Micrococcus.
