PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a waste separating method with high separation quality for separating cut pieces of a carrier tape into resin and paper, and a separating apparatus therefor. SOLUTION: The separating apparatus for separating cut pieces of a carrier tape, which is made of a resin or paper, discharged when an electronic component is mounted on a substrate comprises a vibration separator for separating the cut pieces including large/small-sized resin pieces and paper pieces of a paper carrier tape into small-sized resin pieces, large-sized resin pieces and paper pieces by a vibration screen and a vibrating sieve and a winnow separator 25 for separating the small-sized resin pieces and the paper pieces on the basis of the difference in specific gravity by using circulation flow by wind power of blowing upward the mixture of the small-sized resin pieces and the paper pieces separated by the vibration separator 22, and the waste separating method separates the cut pieces of the carrier tape into the small resin pieces, large resin pieces and paper pieces to obtain recyclable valuable matter.
