<p>The present invention provides a rubber composition for a tire, which is excellent in terms of low heat build-up (low fuel consumption), wet grip performance and abrasion resistance, and a pneumatic tire that uses the rubber composition for a tire in components of the tire (especially the tread). The present invention relates to a rubber composition for a tire, which contains a diene-based polymer, silica and a compound represented by formula (2), wherein the diene-based polymer is a modified diene-based polymer obtained by reacting (A) and (B) below, and the rubber composition contains 5 to 23 parts by mass of the compound represented by formula (2) relative to 100 parts by mass of a rubber component. (A): An active conjugated diene-based polymer which has an alkali metal at a polymer terminal and which is obtained by polymerizing a conjugated diene monomer or a conjugated diene monomer and an aromatic vinyl monomer in the presence of component (C) mentioned below. (B): A modifier having a functional group. (C): A chemical species obtained by reacting a compound represented by formula (1) below and an organic alkali metal compound. (In formula (1), R1 and R2 may be the same or different, and are each a hydrogen atom, a branched or unbranched alkyl group, a branched or unbranched aryl group, a branched or unbranched alkoxy group, a branched or unbranched silyloxy group, a branched or unbranched acetal group, a carboxyl group, a mercapto group or a derivative of these groups.
