The present invention is concerned with imidazole-cascade elution (ICE), which is a method for isolating distinct fractions from a source of protein. Specifically, it is concerned with the isolation of a specific fraction (rPrPOX) from purified recombinant prion protein (rPrP), the use of the novel protein (rPrPOX) in detecting scrapie prion protein (PrPSc) in food samples or in samples obtained from mammals, such as humans, and a kit comprising the rPrP for use for detecting PrPSc.
