<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify an optical layout in a projector including a light source unit capable of generating the three primary colors of light by using a blue light source as an excitation light source. <P>SOLUTION: The projector comprises: the light source unit 60; a display element 51; a light source side optical system 170 that emits light from the light source unit 60 to the display element 51; a projection side optical system 221 that emits projection light generated by the display element 51, toward a screen; and projector control means that controls the light source unit 60 and display element 51. The light source unit 60 includes: an excitation light source 71 that emits light of a specific wavelength band range; and a light emitting plate 101 including a fluorescent light emitting part that uses the surface as a reflecting face and in which a phosphor layer laid for emitting light of the specific wavelength band range by using light emitted from the excitation light source 71 as excitation light is provided, and a diffusion part for diffusing light emitted from the excitation light source 71.
