The purpose of the present invention is to provide a VAIPS liquid crystal display device, which has a liquid crystal material used therein, said liquid crystal material having negative dielectric constant anisotropy (?e<0), and which has a high response speed, a wide view angle, a high transmissivity when light is transmitted, and an excellent contrast ratio with a high black level when light is blocked. This liquid crystal display device is composed of a first substrate, a second substrate, and a liquid crystal composition layer, which is sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate, and which has negative dielectric constant anisotropy. The liquid crystal display device is an electrooptic display device, which has a plurality of pixels, each of which can be independently controlled, and has a pair of pixel electrode and a common electrode, said electrodes being provided on the first substrate and/or the second substrate. The long axis of the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal composition layer is substantially vertically aligned or hybrid-aligned with the substrate surface. |
