Sulphur dioxide is manufactured by burning a mixture of ferrous sulphate and combustible carbonaceous material or liquid or gaseous fuel in a fluidized bed maintained at a temperature of not less than 600 DEG C. Combustible materials which may be used include coke, non-caking coal, anthracite duff, coke oven gas, producer gas, waste gas from petrol crackers, gas from sewage works and fuel oil. Sulphides of iron or spent oxide may also be incorporated in the fuel. The gas for supporting the fluidized bed and maintaining the combustion, which may be air or other oxygen-containing gas, may be pre-heated and the proportion of combustible material in the bed correspondingly decreased. Specification 702,281 is referred to.
|
