Tetrachloro-3-imino- isoindolin-1-one (I) or its alkali metal salts (Ia) is prepd. by reacting tetrachloro-orthophthalodinitrile (II) with LiOH, NaOH and/or KOH in substantially anhydrous tert. butanol as solvent, and opt. liberating the (I) from the (Ia) formed by treatment with a dil. acid: M = Li, Na, K. Pref. the finely divided alkali metal hydroxide is used in an amt. of 1.0-5.0 mol. per mol. (III), and the tert. butanol has a water content of less than 5 wt. % and is used in an amt. of 5-15 times the wt. of (II). The reaction is carried out at 26-80 deg. C.
