The threshold matrix is generated on the basis of a plurality of matrix values that indicate the presence or absence of dots in a plurality of dot patterns that have different tone values (g), being generated under layered constraint conditions and corresponding to a prescribed pixel region. In said dot patterns having tone values in the range g 1 = g g 2 , a plurality of pixels that form each dot are contiguous in the X direction or the Y direction.</p>
