<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently use a recording medium by preventing reduction in the number of still images which can be taken continuously. <P>SOLUTION: A CPU (18) obtains the minimum guaranteed speed and the free area information relating to a memory card (24). An area management unit(32) classifies the free area of the memory card (24) into a plurality writable speed classes. The CPU(18) writes image data onto the memory card (24)in accordance with a speed and speed class selected by a user.
