The method involves determining the current frequency of the alternating current voltage, where the frequency of the alternating current voltage is variable. A parameter of data transmission is controlled depending on the determined frequency. A subcarrier signal is modulated with the data to be transmitted. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a transmitting device for transmitting data over an alternating current voltage-power supply line; (2) a receiving device for transmitting data over an alternating current voltage-power supply line; and (3) a frequency determining unit for determining the actual frequency of the alternating current voltage of an alternating current-power supply line.
