Mechanical processing of planar base materials (2), comprises: applying a lubricant (8) on at least one side of a cover layer (6), where the cover layer is produced from a thin and hard plate material; attaching the cover layer and a base (7) on opposite sides of the planar base material, where the lubricant layer of the cover layer is facing towards or away from the planar base material; and carrying out mechanical processing of the planar base material such that the lubricant lubricates and/or cools the processing tool. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a multi-layer system (1) for mechanical processing of the planar base material, comprising the planar base material, the cover layer and the base, which are arranged on opposite sides of the planar base material, where the cover layer is provided at least on one side with the lubricant and optionally applied with a side opposite to the planar base material, which is coated or uncoated with the lubricant; and (2) a processing layer for mechanical processing of planar base materials, where the processing layer is made of a thin and hard plate materials, and is provided at least on one side with the lubricant for lubricating and/or cooling the processing tool during mechanical processing.
