Lubricating Oil Filter Assembly with an Associated Valve

The invention provides a lubricating oil filter as­sembly 40 for an internal combustion engine (10 fig 1), and includes a body 50 having an oil inlet 51, an oil outlet 52 and a conduit 56 connecting the oil inlet to the oil outlet. The filter assembly also has a chamber 53 suitable for accommodating a filter element 62, the chamber being in communication with the oil inlet and oil outlet. The oil filter assembly has a valve arrangement 57 within the conduit to enable a flow of lubricating oil to be allowed, depending upon an oil inlet pressure. The valve arrangement may provide for a bypass flow past the filter chamber, and a sensor 80 may detect when the valve is in an open position. The filter arrangement may be used for a turbocharger oil feed of an internal combustion engine, and the filter may be fixed to either the cylinder block (11 fig 1) or turbocharger housing (21 fig 1).
