The device (1) has a hollow cylindrical tensioning piston (4) moveably guided in a housing (2). An adjusting device adjusts a working range of the piston in steps, and includes a detent clip (18) and an associated detent profiling at the piston. The detent clip includes two clamping sections engaging into the detent profiling at the piston. The detent clip includes a spring section with a torsion bar, which connects the clamping sections in spring-biased manner such that torsion spring deflection is achieved when the clamping sections are laterally moved apart from each other.
