<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing an α-aryl alcohol by making an alkyl aryl ketone to be hydrogenated industrially advantageously. <P>SOLUTION: The environmental harmony type production method of an α-aryl alcohol comprises as follows. In a hydrogenation reaction of an alkyl aryl ketone which makes water participate in a reaction, under the presence of a catalyst which supports a palladium metal, the alkyl aryl ketone and hydrogen are made to react. In that case, as a solvent, water or water and an organic solvent are used, carbon dioxide is added to a reaction system, and thereby it is possible to raise the rate of reaction or to lower the amount of the catalyst used than conventional technique.
