PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet carrying device for reliably carrying sheet materials in the opposite direction even when using a carrying mechanism for driving a specified roller at a rotating speed different from that of another roller.SOLUTION: When carrying documents P placed on a document plate 2 separately one by one, the sheet carrying device rotates a feed roller 5 located on the upstream side of a carrying passage, slower than another roller such as a pull-out roller 7 located on the downstream side, to select the documents P to be carried either in a positive direction from the document plate 2 toward a stack part 15 or in the opposite direction. When selecting them to be carried in the opposite direction, it moves the feed roller 5 to a position of no contact with the documents P being carried on the carrying passage in the opposite direction.
