A stop/start control device (20) applied to a spark ignition internal combustion engine (1). When stop conditions are established, the stop/start control device stops the internal combustion engine (1), and when the restart conditions are established, the stop/start control device restarts the internal combustion engine (1). While interrupting spark ignition of the internal combustion engine (1) in response to the stop conditions being established, the stop/start control device (20) allows fuel supply to the engine (1) to continue. When the restart conditions are established after the stop conditions are established and before the engine (1) completes its stop, the stop/start control device (20) restarts the engine (1) by restarting spark ignition of the engine (1) so that fuel supplied after the stop conditions are established combusts.
